Those who practice meditation soon learn the value of silence, and that silence is much greater than not speaking words or even the absence of sound. What is silence, then? From the spiritual perspective, silence is empty of words, sound, or image but full of presence. Silence emanates from and as the existence of God or Absolute Reality within us.
Once our attention and awareness move beyond the spoken word and then beyond the subtle inner “noise” of sensation, thought, and feeling, it comes to rest in the centre of our being, our essential Self. It is there that we discover true silence. Through the doorway of silence, we gain access to the higher wisdom of the divine Self and the inner resources to live a truly fulfilling life.

The Wonderful Efficacy of Silence
The cultivation of silence helps us discover how to abide in the stillness of our essential Self and take refuge in the Self during activity. It is a way we train ourselves, just like we do in meditation, to participate in life with a quieter mind. We withdraw our attention from being so outwardly directed and involved and focus on our subtle energy, our inner experience of the Self.
And then, we become more skilful in what we want to say and how we interact. We learn that we can draw from the soul – the source of wisdom within us – the creative power and energy that streams forth from the wholeness of our being.
Now, Let’s look at how the cultivation of silence supports us in our quest for truth and overall well-being.
The Value of Silence – Spiritual Guidance
silence teaches you the value of words
The beautiful thing about sitting in silence is that it teaches you the value of words and how powerful they truly are. Silence teaches you to speak only when it’s truly necessary, and only about that which is kind, loving and life-giving.
Silence Enhances Our Energy
Like meditation, the cultivation and practice of silence conserves and enhances prana or life force. You know this if you have been on a silent retreat or already practice days of silence. It’s astounding how much energy it takes to talk! As soon as we stop talking so much, prana is enhanced. Prana is connected to the breath. It takes a lot of breath to talk – a lot of energy to form words, put them out there, and be engaged in conversation. You will find your energy renewed and enhanced through your practice of silence.
Silence Helps Us to Slow Down
Further, being silent helps us slow down. We are all engaged in so many conversations every day with our smartphones, television, other people, or reading. We move through time and space with these conversations, whether speaking or just listening or even thinking through conversations in our head. When we practice silence, we turn off those streams of conversation.
We are not getting on our computer; we are not checking our phone; we are not engaging in conversations with humans or pets. We even refrain from conversing with ourselves in our mind. We withdraw our attention again and again into stillness.
Silence helps you to remember who you truly are
Sitting in silence helps you remember who you truly are underneath it all and why you’re here on this planet. It helps you reconnect with the centre of your being and the Truth of who you are.
silence gives you courage
Stillness helps you find the inner strength, courage, and confidence to be all that life created you to be so that you can live your life in alignment with your purpose.
silence helps you find peace of mind
Silence helps you find that peace which transcends all understanding – a state of being this noisy world knows little or nothing about – so that you can remain peaceful, calm and centred amidst all life’s many challenges and trials.
silence helps you to open your heart
The world teaches us to be critical and judgmental towards one another. To notice our differences and look at them as a reason to keep our distance from one another. But silence is wise.
Silence teaches you to embrace compassion, love, humility, and understanding. To recognise yourself in your fellow human beings and to love them as you would want them to love you.
silence helps you let go of the illusion of separation
The noise that’s present in our day to day lives keeps most people from experiencing the oneness of all things. But silence helps us to remember. Sitting in silence helps us to Know the oneness of all things, not just mentally – through thoughts and ideas, but spiritually – through direct contact and experience.
silence helps you experience your bliss
The world offers nothing of lasting value. But silence does. Silence helps you tap into your own bliss so that you can experience the delicious feeling that comes from being ONE with all that life created you to be, and ONE with everything.
silence helps you tap into your soul’s wisdom
There is wisdom in the world and True Wisdom in the silence. And through stillness, you can tap into your soul’s wisdom and access feelings, and experiences that are out of this world.
silence helps you to connect with the Divine within
It is in those moments of stillness you can hear the voice of God. Only through silence, you can have direct contact with the Source of all things. And the great masters, mystics and spiritual teachers of the world knew this to be true:
“God’s one and only voice is silence” ~ Herman Melville
“Be still, and know that I am God!” ~ Psalm 46:10
“Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.” ~ Rumi
The Value of Silence – Final thoughts
It is in silence that you can hear the voice of God. Only through silence, can you have direct contact with the Source of all things.
